How to Talk About Alcohol Safety

Stores have been packed with holiday savings, credit cards have been charged, and food has been consumed. The holidays are often a time for family and friends to come together and create lasting memories with one another. The matching holiday pajamas leave a lasting impression on social media, but what impression does your relationship with alcohol leave on your child. Although difficult, conversations about alcohol safety are necessary. When consuming alcoholic beverages around young people, consider the message you would like for them to receive. Have you caught yourself saying any of the following: “I need a drink,” “a drink would help me relax,” or “wine helps me sleep better at night?” These statements could inadvertently cause your child to believe that alcohol is a suitable replacement for healthy coping strategies.

It’s never too early to have age-appropriate conversations with your child about alcohol. About 10% of children say they have tried alcohol and that number increases to 50% by the time they are 15 (SAMHSA). Early and frequent conversations about alcohol and other drugs tend to be more effective than having “the talk” once. If you choose to not have the conversation with your child as a parent, they will still have the conversion with their peers. Silence communicates as loudly as a verbal conversation, so it’s up to you to decide what message is explicitly shared.

For general questions about the FCPS Substance Abuse Prevention Program, please contact the Office of Student Safety & Wellness at: (571) 423-4270.

As a reminder, schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 16, for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday.

FCPS students continue to find incredible ways to serve their community while building Portrait of a Graduate skills such as becoming an ethical and global citizen.

FCPS is excited to collaborate again with Volunteer Fairfax for the upcoming Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend of Service, Saturday, January 14, to Monday, January 16. This service opportunity helps empower individuals and strengthens communities while honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Volunteer Fairfax will host several ways for the community to get involved including volunteer activities for students and adults of all ages.

Orthodox Epiphany- Observance Day

In the Orthodox church, Epiphany is celebrated on January 19 and celebrates the baptism of Jesus rather than the arrival of the Magi. This observance commemorates Christ's baptism by John the Forerunner (John the Baptist) in the River Jordan, beginning of Christ's ministry on earth and revealing the Holy Trinity of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to mankind. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

Three Kings Day Observance

Three Kings Day (January 6), also known as the Epiphany, is a Christian celebration that commemorates the Biblical story of the three kings who followed the star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the Christ child. This marks the official 12th day of Christmas.

FCPS has designated Three Kings Day/Epiphany as a religious and cultural observance day (O day). There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

Preparing for Winter Weather

As we move into the new year, we are reminding everyone to plan ahead for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in [email protected], bookmark the FCPS website, plan for childcare, if appropriate, and know what items your child may need to take home before a weather event.

Watch this video to see how weather-related closing decisions are made

FCPS’ inclement weather procedures will remain the same as last year. The first five inclement weather days will be traditional “snow days” with no school activities. After those five days, we will use the flexibility provided by the Virginia General Assembly to have unscheduled virtual learning days, whenever possible, to maintain the continuity of learning. Virtual learning on these days will be synchronous/live instruction, following the inclement weather virtual learning day schedule (includes a two-hour delay).

FCPS’ website is generally the first mode of communication during emergency weather closings. Other communication channels will be used as quickly as possible including email, text, social media, and news stations. Learn more about how schedule changes are communicated

Speed Cameras Target School Zone Safety

On December 6, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted to launch a pilot program that will have 10 speed monitoring devices (speed cameras) installed throughout the county. These cameras will be in nine school zones and one construction zone. Thanks to our county partners for helping to improve the safety of our students and staff.

Studies show that speed camera enforcement is effective in improving safety by reducing speeding, accidents, and injuries. Read more about the school zone speed camera pilot program.

Floris Cafeteria Chaperones Needed

GovDelivery1 month 2 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Floris is looking for parent or guardian volunteers who are committed to helping our lunch periods run smoothly each day. We aspire to have volunteers sign up to chaperone a 1 ½ hour shift during the 11 am-2 pm lunch period each weekday. A volunteer may sign up for either the 11 am to 12:30 pm shift or the 12:30 to 2 pm shift, or both if they prefer, on a particular day. Please be aware that chaperoning is not an opportunity to sit and eat lunch with children since it requires circulation throughout the cafeteria. Opportunities to chaperone for January-June will be available on a first come, first served basis using SignupGenius.

Cafeteria chaperone duties will include:

  • Assisting students with lunch items and utensils
  • Assisting Floris cafeteria staff by providing students with gentle reminders about cafeteria expectations
  • Assisting students with the disposal of trash items prior to dismissal
  • Assisting our custodian with the wipe down of tables between lunch sessions

All parent or guardian chaperones will receive guidance on the first day of volunteering. For consistency, we would prefer to have volunteers who are able to serve on multiple occasions. If you can commit to a shift or multiple shifts during the school year, please sign-up here. Floris Families,

Another amazing week of learning at Floris. It was so great to see school spirit and smiles everywhere. We will wrap up the week with the Annual Floris PTA Spirit Ball tonight at 6:30pm. Please enter through Door 6 (cafeteria door).

Please remember there are two deadlines next week. If you are able to support our Annual Giving Tree, all cards need to be at Floris by next Tuesday (12/14). All parent referrals for AAP Level IV are due by next Wednesday (12/15). No late referrals will be accepted.

Our Winter Music Showcase, featuring our 5th-6th grade strings and choral students is next Thursday evening (12/15), starting at 7:00pm, at Rachel Carson Middle School.

The cold weather is here, and the first official day of winter is approaching soon. Thank you parents in advance for ensuring students are dressed appropriately for the weather and outdoor recess. Please remember to stay tuned to inclement weather updates on the local news channels, Channel 21, or on the FCPS website.  If you haven’t already done so, this is a good time to update your child’s emergency care card and have an alternate plan in place if the weather causes school to open later, dismiss early, or close for the day.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Keep Your Child Warm During Outdoor Activities

We will monitor the weather for low temperatures, wind chill advisories and warnings, and weather advisories which may prevent children from being outside. Make sure your child is dressed appropriately with a warm coat and other cold-weather clothing, so they can comfortably enjoy their time outdoors. See the National Weather Service’s tips on staying safe during cold weather.

If you need assistance supplying your child with cold-weather clothing our Social Worker, Maggie Seneca ([email protected]), can assist you. You can also call Fairfax County's Coordinated Services Planning at 703-222-0880. The multilingual staff can assist with any challenges you are facing, including food, shelter, employment, financial assistance, and healthcare.

Preparing for Winter Weather

Winter weather will be here before you know it!

Be sure to plan ahead for the winter season. Make sure your contact information is up-to-date in [email protected], bookmark the FCPS website, plan for childcare, if appropriate, and know what items your child may need to take home before a weather event

Congratulations to our Floris VASO (Virginia Science Olympiad) Team.  Out of 65 teams participating in this year's VASO competition, our Floris Future Scientists finished in the top 8 of seven different events!

Of special note, the Floris "Macromolecules" team finished 1st overall, and our "Logical Thinking" team finished 2nd overall.

Special Message from FCPS Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist

Mental Health, Coping & Addiction

One in four Americans suffers from a mental illness. Almost 3 in 5 people with mental illness will receive no treatment or medication. In 2019, an estimated 47.6 million adults (19% of the country) had a mental illness, but only 43% received any kind of mental health care (Johns Hopkins). There are many reasons why a person may turn to drugs or alcohol initially, including using these mind-altering substances as a coping mechanism for stress, difficult emotions, physical ailments, and other issues. Drugs and alcohol can provide a temporary respite from reality and everyday life. They can enhance pleasure and decrease inhibitions and anxiety.  Drug use can be an unhealthy coping mechanism. Coping mechanisms are habits formed over time that serve to help a person manage situations or stress levels. Not all coping mechanisms are maladaptive or destructive; however, addiction is both.

Before using drugs as a coping strategy here are some recommendations for a healthier mindset. The goal is to identify the “void” or issue and work towards healing. In the meantime, experts recommend diet and exercise as great places to start. See your Primary Care Physician and a therapist if needed. Quality sleep is also a major factor in a healthy mind. Surround yourself with good people and don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it.

Floris Kiss & Ride Reminder 12/4/22

GovDelivery1 month 3 weeks ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

As the cold weather approaches or when inclement weather hits, our Kiss and Ride loop may become slowed by congestion. Please help ensure the safety of our Floris families by continuing to follow the procedures and traffic patterns indicated below.

General guidelines for entering the Kiss ‘N’ Ride loop safely and respectfully:
  • Vehicles entering from Centreville Rd. entrance should remain to the RIGHT of the main entrance.
    • Buses and staff will enter to the left.
    • The bus loop is designated only for buses and staff during arrival and dismissal times.
  • At the stop light, vehicles coming north on Centreville Rd. (U-TURN), south on Centreville Rd. (STRAIGHT), and LEFT off of West Ox. are expected to JOIN THE CAR LINE ON WEST OX RD. once the Kiss ‘N’ Ride loop and entrance becomes full (see the map below).
    • Cutting in the car line presents safety risks to our families and travelers along Centreville Rd.
  • While in the West Ox car line, DO NOT block the Fairfax Fire Department driveway.
General guidelines for dropping off and picking up students safely and respectfully:
  • Never pass another vehicle in the Kiss ‘N’ Ride loop (unless directed to do so by a staff member)
  • Drop-offs and pick-ups will occur within a designated “ZONE” (about 8 car lengths long)
  • Students enter and exit from the passenger side of the vehicle. Parents/guardians are encouraged to move younger sibling car seats to the driver side if possible.
  • Students should enter and exit the vehicle as quickly and safely as possible
  • A line of cones will be present to designate a “buffer zone” between vehicles and the sidewalk (3 feet from curb).
    • Please do not position your vehicle in the zone.
  • Adults should remain in their vehicle
  • Parking is not permitted within the Kiss ‘N’  Ride lane of travel
  • To be considerate of others, always move your vehicle forward when directed to do so by a staff member.
  • Seek resolution to concerns by involving the adult staff members at an appropriate time.

Floris Families,

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break. There were lots of smiles on Monday morning as we returned to the building from the break.

Our 4th-6th grade students will be participating in the Walk in My Shoes Program next week. The Walk In My Shoes program fosters inclusion by providing empathy-building activities designed to teach elementary school-aged children how to be respectful and inclusive of all children, especially those with medical conditions, developmental challenges, or learning differences. Want to see more about this Herndon based non-profit check our their website

Our counseling team is absolutely amazing. They helped create the One Floris Day, planned the Walk in My Shoes Program, supported families as needed with food for Thanksgiving, and are the lead in the Floris Annual Giving Tree.  We are grateful for our school counselors, Sarah de Kramer and James Duffield, and our School Social Worker, Maggie Seneca.  They don't just support our students, but our entire community.

Next Thursday, FCPS will be observing Bodhi Day. A blessed Bodhi Day to all who celebrate.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Inclusive Schools Week- December 5-9

Inclusive Schools Week has celebrated the progress that schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to an increasingly diverse student population, including students who are marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference, and other factors. The week also provides an important opportunity for educators, students and parents to discuss what else needs to be done in order to ensure that their schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children. This year, the Inclusive Schools Week’s theme is “Unity Within Our Community.”

Spirit Week Next Week

Bodhi Day, Thursday, Dec. 8, is the Buddhist holiday that commemorates the day that the historical Buddha, Siddhartha Gautama (Shakyamuni), experienced enlightenment, also known as bodhi in Sanskrit and Pali. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.Learn more about Bodhi Day in this video from the Miami Children’s Museum. See the complete 2022-23 school year calendar.

Special Message - FCPS Substance Abuse Prevention

Special Message - FCPS Substance Abuse Prevention

The holidays usually involve family time, games, movies, food, and possibly drinks. The holidays may involve less family members this year, but that doesn’t necessarily mean less alcohol for some. Alcohol consumption has increased during the pandemic and when ABC stores were deemed essential it didn’t help lower those rates (ABC News, September 29, 2020). Many people are still trying to figure out how to navigate our “new normal” since a global pandemic wasn’t on our to-do list in 2020, but we encourage you to consider a few things during these trying times.

Questions to consider when drinking with your family:

  1. What message am I sending if I drink in excess around my underage child?
  2. Have I had conversations about responsible drinking with them?
  3. Are the conversations I have about alcohol realistic?
  4. Do my conversations with others reinforce alcohol use as a coping skill during stressful times?
  5. What messages am I sending my underage child if I allow them to drink with me or another adult in the house?

Info to consider:

“One-third of Fairfax County students (33.7%) reported drinking alcohol at least once in their lifetime, ranging from 18.8% of eighth-grade students to half of twelfth-grade students (49.4%). One in seven students (15.2%) reported drinking alcohol in the past month, ranging from 4.5% of eighth-grade students to 27.7% of twelfth-grade students.” (FCPS Youth Survey 2020)

“Female students reported higher rates of alcohol use in their lifetime (36.1% compared to 31.2% of male students), in the past month (17.1% and 13.1%, respectively), and binge drinking in the past two weeks (7.3% and 6.5%, respectively)” (FCPS Youth Survey 2020).
