Floris Families,

We hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving Break. There were lots of smiles on Monday morning as we returned to the building from the break.

Hanukkah began at sundown on Sunday, November 28. We wish Hanukkah Sameach (happy Hanukkah) to all who celebrate the festival of lights.

On Tuesday evening, Ms. Walker joined several other principals to accept a donation from Asha-Jyothi (AJ). AJ is a volunteer based non-profit organization dedicated to serving the needs of the underprivileged by providing access to education and healthcare. Floris received the donation because a few Floris families registered for the 13th Annual 5K Run/Walk. Next year's 5KRun/Walk is scheduled for Sunday, September 18th at Fairfax Corner.

The Floris PTA spirit wear arrived this week. If you ordered, your items should have come home this week with your child. It is so fun to have new spirit wear to enjoy!

Next Wednesday, FCPS will be observing Bodhi Day. A blessed Bodhi Day to all who celebrate.

We hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

Amanda Dorr, Assistant Principal, acdorr@fcps.edu

Positivity Project

 Bravery (Dec.6-10)

What does Bravery mean? You act with mental, moral, or physical strength even when you know things are difficult or scary. Bravery refers to voluntary (not coerced) action in the face of a dangerous circumstance. This strength involves judgement; the brave person must have an understanding of the risks and consequences involved in acting.

Why does it matter? Overcoming fears is critically important in individual development, as it allows the person to do more and become more. A person can be brave every single day. On a physical level, bravery allows us to overcome fears such as swimming or playing a sport. And on a moral level, doing what we know to be right, despite the risks, gives us the sense that we are acting on behalf of a larger purpose.

Bravery Quote of the Week: “I learned that courage is not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.” - Nelson Mandela

Level IV AAP Parent Referrals

Parents/guardians of students in Grades 2-7 who would like their student to be considered for full-time advanced academic programs (level IV AAP services) may submit the AAP Level IV Referral Form to Amy Albanese at abalbanese@fcps.edu  by no later than December 15.

The window to submit an AAP Level IV Referral Form is the first day of school through December 15, annually.  Forms for full-time and part-time referrals are available on the AAP Forms Page. No late referrals for Level IV services can be accepted.

Submitting a referral form for AAP Level IV will initiate a process that begins at the local school and is then completed at the central office level. Our school will put together a portfolio that includes multiple data which are considered holistically. At the central office level, a committee of professionals from various schools review materials to determine eligibility for level IV placement.  Eligibility decisions are communicated by early April. Parents may request a copy of the portfolio that was submitted after they are submitted to the central selection committee by emailing Amy Albanese, abalbanese@fcps.edu. Referrals for AAP Levels II-III (part-time services) are screened at the local school.

For more information, there are parent presentations available on the FCPS AAP website (under “Presentations”) that contain information similar to our fall parent information meetings at Floris Elementary.

You can also find information and the presentations from Ms. Albanese at  the Floris AAP Website.

FCPS will not accept any late referrals after December 15.

Floris Pop-Up Vaccine Location - 12/16 and 1/6- 4:30-7:00pm

GovDelivery1 day 2 hours ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

Floris ES has been chosen by the Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) as a location for ‘Precision Pop-Up Clinics’ for the administration of COVID-19 vaccinations for children ages 5-11 on December 16, 2021 and January 6, 2022, from 4:30-7:00pm.

The vaccines will be administered by Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employees, and the clinic is open to the public. This will mean additional vehicles and people arriving near/during dismissal. Because of the timing, we wanted to make families aware that Kiss-and-Ride will be impacted on both of those dates.

To assist in a safe situation on both dates:

  • FCPS Safety and Security are working with us to determine any needed supports.
  • Additional staff will be at Kiss-and-Ride to support the increased volume.
  • All families MUST have their number in the window, so staff can easily identify our families and get students to cars safely and quickly. *If you do not have your Kiss-and-Ride number, call the main office ASAP.
  • If possible, please have your child ride the bus or walk (if you are a designated walker) on both of those Thursdays.
  • Please bring your patience. This will make dismissal a bit longer than usual, and patience will be needed.

Information Shared About all of the Pop-Up Clinics

FCPS and the health department are offering the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 5-11 at ten clinics located at schools across Fairfax County. Clinics will be held after school hours, evenings, and weekends. All children are welcome and a parent or other responsible adult is required to attend with them. No appointment is necessary, and all vaccinations are free. For locations and clinic hours, click here. The health department website has information about other options for children’s COVID-19 vaccination. #VaxUP

 Gratitude (Nov. 22-Dec.3)

What does Gratitude mean? You are aware of and thankful for good things that happen. Gratitude is the quality of feeling and expressing thankfulness and appreciation. It is affirmation that there is goodness in other people and the world, and that we have received that goodness.

Why does it matter? Out of all 24-character strengths, gratitude is the single best predictor of individual well-being. It is correlated with increased energy, empathy, happiness and optimism. Numerous studies have concluded that gratitude is like a muscle. The more you practice it, the stronger it gets – and the more you’re able to reap its benefits.

Quote of the Week: “As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” – John F. Kennedy

Honoring Veterans with our Hero Wall  Floris Green Team News  America Recycles Day (Nov. 15) and Pumpkin Contest Results

Next Monday is “America Recycles Day." The Floris Green Team is always looking at ways to help our community learn about Reducing, Reusing and Recycling. This week during our team meeting, the members created a recycling presentation to present to their respective classes. Teachers allowed time for students to teach one another about what can and cannot be recycled in the classroom. The Green Team members also conducted an audit to find out which classes needed more recycling bins.

Want to find out more about the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments America Recycles Day and contest? Check out their website here and this video of the Covanta Recycling Center at FCPS.

Thank you to everyone who entered our Second Annual Pumpkin Contest.  It was way too difficult to decide on just one pumpkin!!  We want to recognize those who exemplified the theme “Our Amazing Planet” through pumpkin art and those who best used natural materials on their pumpkins.

 Creativity

What does Creativity mean? You come up with new and original ways to think about and to do things. Creative people can look at the world in original ways. They are open to new experiences and have an imaginative and independent thought process.

Why does it matter? Creativity is associated with intrinsic motivation, meaning the process of creation is an end in itself. The work is not accomplished in order to receive an award. Creativity is also correlated with self-actualization or fulfilling one’s talents and potential.

Creativity quote of the week: “It’s not about becoming safe. If anybody wants to keep creating, they have to be about change.” -Miles Davis

Reading Tip from Shannon Daly, Floris Reading Specialist

"Are we there yet?"

Does it seem like you are always driving someone to practice, this event or that?

Use the time spent in the car or bus for wordplay. Talk about how jam means something you put on toast as well as cars stuck in traffic. How many other homonyms can your child think of? When kids are highly familiar with the meaning of a word, they have less difficulty reading it.

Looking for some other quick literacy activities that keep everyone engaged?

  • Listen to a book on tape and discuss what is happening.
  • Have a rhyme off with younger students or choose a letter and have them name the things they see that start with that letter/sound.
  • Have older students retell their favorite story, share how the main character is changing or make connections to the real world.

Driving doesn’t have to be lost time.  Make it fun and educational.

Floris Families,

It was a short, but busy week. We have started the second quarter and continue to see learning and joy throughout the school.

Although the weather continued to cause changes to the Harvest Parade, we were able to do an indoor parade. We are so glad to have been able to have this annual tradition in-person this year for the students.

Next week is a busy one as well. Tuesday morning (11/9) is our photo make-up and retake date. If your child missed the original picture day or you want a retake, please ensure your child is picture ready on Tuesday morning. On Thursday, all FCPS schools have a two-hour early release in honor of Veterans' Day. Our dismissal time at Floris on Thursday, November 11 is 2:00pm.

As we enter this month of Thanksgiving, we want to share our gratitude with our staff and families for making Floris such as wonderful community. We want to share special thanks to the Floris PTA for their support. Please remember to support our PTA through Friends of Floris

Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday (11/7). Remember to turn back your clocks one hour before you go to bed on Saturday.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Holly Walker, Principal, hjwalker@fcps.edu

Amanda Dorr, Assistant Principal, acdorr@fcps.edu

Forgiveness

What Does FORGIVENESS Mean? Forgiveness is the ability to move past being injured and allow yourself to reconcile with the person who hurt you. Forgiveness can often be seen as a selfless act, but it also carries many benefits for those who practice it. Those who demonstrate forgiveness have the ability to move forward after someone has hurt them. Forgiveness is often rooted in the idea that all people are valuable and worthy of a second chance.

Why does it Matter? For individuals, forgiveness has benefits that range from increased health to developing positive relationships to coming to an understanding that no one is without fault. Remaining bitter and angry increases your stress levels. Forgiveness helps an individual release that resentment and repair or strengthen his/her relationships.

Quote of the Week: “The weak can never forgive. Forgiveness is the attribute of the strong.” -Mahatma GandhiI

Despite rescheduling to today and relocating to indoors, Floris students and staff had a fantastic time during this morning's harvest parade.  We are so fortunate to have so many flexible community members that can still keep these fun Floris traditions alive!

You may view a recording of the parade here, on this unlisted YouTube link.

Harvest Parade Change

GovDelivery1 month ago

Having trouble viewing this email? View it as a Web page.

With the rain today causing muddy and slippery fields and the projected temperatures in the 30's tomorrow, we are moving the Harvest Parade inside. While this allows our students to participate in this annual Floris tradition, due to the needed social distancing, this change means we are unable to have parents/visitors at the parade.

So how can parents see the parade?

Thanks to technology, parents will still be able to see the parade. Ms. McGrath will be recording the parade and will send the link to the recording to families later on Wednesday.

Important Details:
  • Staff and students will be socially distanced across the school throughout the parade.
  • If students are planning to dress up, they should wear their costume to school.
  • Please make sure there are no weapons (even toy items) or hand held accessories with the costume.
  • All students are required to have on their face covering in school.
  • The rule regarding no full face costume masks for safety and visibility remains the same as previous years.
  • Please also avoid any costume that might scare our younger students.

Floris Families,

The Book Fair was a great success. Many thanks to our librarian, Tiffany Dowling, for all of the hours and hard work to create such a wonderful book fair experience for our students.

Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate with our Harvest Parade today. As shared in the message yesterday, we will plan for the Harvest Parade next Wednesday, November 3 at 9:30am.

Please remember that today is a two-hour early release (Floris dismissal time is 2:00pm), and there is no school on Monday and Tuesday (11/1-11/2) for Teacher Workdays.

There are two holidays observed next week. Greetings on Dia de los Meurtos on November 1-2.  Wishing all who celebrate the holiday a joyful and bright Diwali on November 4.

If you have not already done so, please complete and return the Federal Impact Aid forms by next Friday, November 5.

We want to remind everyone that in the SR&R the student dress code is described on page 15. One of the items in the dress code is: Clothing and accessories should not include hats or other head coverings unless worn for significant religious, cultural, or medical purpose. If your child needs to wear a hat or head covering, please ensure that you have shared this information with your child's teacher and/or counselor.

Have a fabulous weekend and enjoy Halloween if you celebrate!
