Welcome, Principal DeSmyter!

The Region 5 Leadership Team is pleased to announce that Mr. Josh DeSmyter has been named the new principal of Floris Elementary School, effective July 1, 2024.

Mr. DeSmyter is currently the principal at Shrevewood Elementary. Prior to his time at Shrevewood, he was the assistant principal at Freedom Hill ES and Franklin Sherman ES.  Mr. DeSmyter started his career with Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) in 2011.   Before coming to FCPS, Mr. DeSmyter taught elementary school in Washington DC as well as Detroit, Michigan where he was named the Outstanding Teacher of the Year.  Mr. DeSmyter has been an educator for 22 years. 

Mr. DeSmyter has experience in supporting, promoting, and enhancing multiple programs as an educational leader, to include Advanced Academics and Special Education. During his tenure at Shrevewood Elementary School, Principal DeSmyter fostered a vibrant and inclusive school culture where he empowered teacher leaders to guide the work of the school in a collaborative manner.  Under his leadership, staff engagement increased to an impressive 92%, indicative of a thriving school community. He implemented a robust Positive Behavior Support Program, resulting in a notable decrease in discipline referrals and a heightened emphasis on positive behavior. Mr. DeSmyter's commitment to excellence extends to the recruitment, hiring, and retention of highly qualified staff.  His strategic planning optimized the delivery of special education services, effectively meeting the diverse needs of students while maximizing resources. 

Mr. DeSmyter is a collaborative leader who is purposeful and intentional in working with staff, parents, and community members in an effort to deliver high quality and rigorous instruction for all students. He is a leader who focuses on celebrating success because he believes this ultimately builds community.  He recognizes the multiple nationalities, cultures, and different perspectives of a school community and works diligently to listen to all stakeholders. He understands the importance of a welcoming and inclusive school culture and understands the importance of open, transparent communication with all. Mr. DeSmyter is a visible leader who is available and present for the students, staff, and community.

Mr. DeSmyter holds a Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education from Spring Arbor University as well as a Master of Arts Degree in Educational Leadership from George Mason University.  Mr. DeSmyter also holds an endorsement in Educational Administration and Supervision, Prek-12.
